However, by the end of the season Elway was back under center, and would get the Broncos into the playoffs with a 9-7 record. In the season next to last game Elway would bite the Colts again leading 3 TD drives in the 4th Quarter to beat the Colts 21-19, after entering the final period down 19-0. In the Wild Card game in Seattle Elway would struggle mightily before being replaced in a disappointing 31-7 loss to the Seahawks.

Prior to the start of the season the Broncos are sold to local businessman Pat Bowlen. After a 1-1 start the Broncos would embark on an impressive 10-game winning streak establishing a new franchise record. The Broncos would go on to win the AFC West with a 13-3 record, as John Elway passes for 2,598 yards, while Sammy Winder rushes for 1,153 yards, and Steve Watson collects 1,170 receiving yards. However the Broncos season would end in disappointment with a 24-17 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers at Mile High Stadium. The Broncos would hold a 17-10 lead entering the 4th Quarter but costly turnover by John Elway would cost the Broncos a chance at playing for the AFC Championship.
